Brigid Heywood
Prof. Heywood was awarded a Chair in Chemistry although… she held a Biology degree! That is how unique she is. The recognition was based on her research around how to grow crystals like nature does: at room temperature, in water, from organic to inorganic matter and viceversa (check out something I learned from her: “coccolithophores”, unicellular algae that use calcium microscopic patters as protection against UV). Working for her in the Research Division at UTAS (Australia) was deeply inspiring and has tremendously marked my career. She taught me to capitalize on my strengths rather than to cry over my weaknesses.
