Virginia Apgar
Dr. Virginia Apgar is the inventor of the Apgar score, a crucial neonatal assessment tool launched in 1953. The virtue of the score lies in its simplicity, allowing medical staff to make quick decisions by assessing newborn health across five areas—Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respiration. I witnessed this score being applied to my son right after birth, which gave me confidence about his well-being without understanding what it meant. Additionally, Dr. Apgar spent her college years in my favorite city, New York, and was highly dedicated to her career as well as to personal hobbies such as music and travel.
