Deborah Jin
Debbie Jin was one of the pioneers of the physics of ultracold quantum gases. She demonstrated the first quantum degenerate gas of fermionic atoms, the first fermionic superfluid, and the creation of polar molecules in the ground state. Without her, the field of AMO physics would look very different from what it is now. Besides all these stellar scientific achievements, she always explained things in a simple, down to earth manner. She was very kind, and managed to transfer her enthusiasm for physics to everybody in the community, including the youngest students. She was also an excellent example on how to have a good work-life balance, and be simultaneously a mother and an extremely succesful scientist. Very sadly, she passed away very young, at only 47. We should all remember her as a great example of what women can achieve in science.
